Frequently Asked Questions

Winding road through a scenic landscape
Tours
Where will we stay?

We only use lodging that is well-located and friendly. Beyond this, however, different guests value different levels of luxury. We help you find the luxury resort, the boutique hotel, the charming B&B, or the cottage in the redwoods – as best suits you. This is just one way we combine an exceptional level of personal service with great value. Request an Itinerary and we will provide you with available accommodation choices for your destination.

Bikes
Can I bring my own bike?

Yes. If you have a favorite bike, it would be a shame not to ride it on these classic routes. If it helps, we are happy for you to ship your bike to us in advance of your trip. We’ll then have it reassembled and ready for you when we collect you at the start of your first day.

Tours
Are children welcome on your trips?

Yes!  Our cycling tours make for a great family vacation.  Our Private Guided tours are better for younger children as we are able to offer more immediate support than on our Self-Guided tours.  The minimum age to travel on a Private Guided tour is 6 years old.  The minimum age for a child to travel on any tour riding their own bike is 11 years.  Children under 18 years of age must always be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  We recommend calling us to talk about destinations, routes, and equipment that would be best suited to your children. No person younger than 14 can ride an eBike on a LifeCycle tour. There is a higher age requirement in certain areas. See youritinerary for more details.

Tours
Do I have to carry my own luggage?

No, that’s our job! We transport your luggage, leaving you free to explore unencumbered. You will, most likely, choose to carry some snacks and light clothing with you for use during the day. We provide panniers or a seat-post bag to help with this. We also offer a wine pickupservice, so you can purchase bottles along the way without having to carry themon your bike.

How far in advance should I book?

During high season—May through October—accommodation and our availability can book out several months in advance. So, the more notice you give us, the better able we are to match your requirements. For couples in high season, we would recommend booking at least six months in advance. Groups of six or more should plan 9 to 12 months out if possible. However, if you are booking at the last minute, we are always happy to check availability.

Booking
How much do the trips cost?

Prices vary according to the duration and the type of accommodation you choose and are provided when you Request an Itinerary. If you have a fixed budget, we are happy to design a trip to that budget.

How do I navigate while on tour?

Navigation for your tour is provided in the form of custom downloadable smartphone app. In addition to turn by turn directions, the app is a wealth of knowledge during your ride for points of interest, dining options, and other useful information. We provide phone mounts so that you can securely attach your phone to your handlebars.

Tours
What other activities can we do?

Besides cycling, there are many other great things to do on our trips.  Depending on the area you are traveling to, the options include kayaking, snorkeling, hot air ballooning,  wine tasting, hiking, and whitewater rafting. Request an Itinerary and we will let you know what other options are available at your destination. We are also happy to make reservations for any of these activities. Typically, people choose to do these activities on rest days.

Tours
What should I pack? Do I need any special kit?

When you book your trip, we will send you a guidebooks with a suggested packing list.

Bikes
How long will an eBike battery last?

There are many factors that can influence how long an eBike battery will last: how hilly the ride is, the weather conditions, your weight, and how much ‘assist’ you use (you can adjust how much you want the bike to assist your riding). Most of our tours have a choice of three different rides on every day of a tour: Leisure, Intermediate, and Challenge. Typically, an eBike’s battery will be sufficient for all our Leisure and Intermediate rides, but the range may be insufficient for our Challenge rides. We can help you calibrate which rides it will be practical for you to ride.

Booking
Do you provide travel insurance?

From our years of experience we know that you should expect the unexpected and we strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance. We recommend our partner, Arch RoamRight. Online quotes are available.

Who goes on your trips?

The one thing that all our guests share is a love of being outdoors. Other than that, our guests come from many backgrounds and have very different levels of cycling experience. As all our trips are customized, we pride ourselves on providing just the right balance of challenge and relaxation to suit each of our guests.

Tours
Where should we stay before and after our trip?

Typically guests stay in the gateway city for their tour such as in San Francisco for the Napa & Sonoma tours. Your itinerary includes suggestions for accommodations in these gateway cities. Alternatively, if you let us know your preferred style of lodging, we will gladly make recommendations and/or reservations.

Tours
Are your tours guided?

On our Self-Guided tours, a guide starts you on your tour and is then on-call until the end of the tour when they collect you for your end-of-tour transfer. Our vans are close by should you need roadside assistance.

For groups of 6 or more, there is also the option to have a guide and van dedicated to your group. These are our Private Guided tours that also include lunches and daily ride briefings.
