Sonoma Bike Tours

Sonoma County has riding to suit all levels. Here is one of our favorite rides for more experienced riders.

But first … “from our sponsors”: We operate self-guided Sonoma bicycle tours in the California Wine Country. If you tour with us we take care of all the logistical details and provide a support van. However, if you want to do your own thing, that’s cool too.  Here an idea for a bike tour in Sonoma County. This is one of the more challenging rides in the area.

And now … the ride: This Sonoma County bike ride starts in Glen Ellen – in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. From here you ride south out of town past the Jack London Village and then through the open lawns and collegiate setting of the Sonoma Developmental Center. You then head east, across the Valley of the Moon and start a classic climb; reminiscent of the best passes in the Pyrenees. The single lane Cavedale Road is narrow, steep, very long and one of our favorite bike rides in Sonoma County. This is a route for patient, experienced climbers (though we once had a sixteen year old guest who sprinted to the top with casualness unique to those that don’t know better).

After 10 miles of climbing you’ll enjoy 10 miles of descending down into the Napa Valley just south of Yountville. Yountville is home to a number of excellent restaurants including Thomas Keller’s French Laundry – repeatedly awarded Best Restaurant in the World (by Restaurant Magazine). There are also a bunch or more casual (and cheaper) options for a great lunch.

From Yountville you can return the way you came or head back via Mt Veeder Rd. Trinity Rd makes for a better descent down to Glen Ellen than the potholed Cavedale Rd.

Whichever route you choose, this is strenuous and remote cycling only suitable for fit, experienced riders – so be prepared!
