The eponymous George Yount was
the founder of Yountville - and reputedly the first
American settler to come to the Napa Valley. Hence
the claim of the town that, "this is where it
all began."
George is buried in the Pioneer
Cemetery just across the street from the Yountville
Park - a nice place for picnic (the park not the
cemetery).
And, if it weren't for food, Yountville's
story might end there. But, there are three
great culinary things about Yountville:
The French Laundry - repeatedly awarded
Best Restaurant in the World (by Restaurant Magazine). It
has recently been demoted to third but still holds
on to the Best in America award which is not
too shabby.
The Oakville Grocery (just a smidge
north from Yountville on Route 29) is packed with fantastic
gourmet produce much of it local. They also do
a mean sandwich.
But if you just want somewhere to
prop your bike and enjoy a great brunch in the shade
of a striped awning, you should head to Gordon's Café. But
don't bother asking to meet Gordon - the place is named
for Sally Gordon who you may very well meet.
