In 1841 the Russian Princess Helena
de Gagarin, niece of the Czar, landed at the Russian
trading post of Fort Ross. She is reputed to have
climbed Mt St Helena on that trip. She named
the mountain for her aunt, the Empress Helena of
Russia. Though Saint Helena was born
in 250 AD and was Mother of Constantine the Great.
The town of St Helena was then named
accordingly.
That's a lot of Helenas!
Perhaps appropriately, considering its
historic name-sakes, the town is crammed with antique shops
and has an excellent Silverado Museum. The
Victorian charm is well preserved - though a little twee
for some.
Perhaps best for cyclists is the abundance
of great places to have lunch within a mile of the Silverado
trail - a road popular with both local and visiting riders.
