Route Ratings
Routes for All Levels
As with many aspects of our trips, we don’t tell you what ability level you need. Rather, tell us the activity level you want and we’ll design it.
Our cycling maps cover over 13,000 square miles of California and Oregon and we have 2,000 miles of mile-by-mile directions – all graded for difficulty. When designing your trip, we combine these routes to create a trip that is just right for you.
Mix and Match
We offer Easy, Intermediate and Challenge levels, and these can be mixed and matched on different days. We also have Training Camps for those wanting to focus purely on training.
| Activity Level | Daily Mileage | Terrain | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 20 – 25 (< 3 hours) | Flat-to-rolling | Designed for people who are new to cycling or who haven't cycled for a while. These routes tend to stick to the valleys where the terrain is gentle and there are plenty of wineries and other interesting places to stop in at along the way. Typically, we add in rest days with a chance to do some other activities or to just relax. |
| Intermediate | 25 – 40 (3 to 4 hours) | Flat-to-rolling but with some hills | These routes are ideal people who take regular exercise and are comfortable cycling for an hour or two at a time. While most of the riding is in the valleys, there will be some hills – up to a mile long – but nothing too steep. Many of these routes have options to do more challenging detours – or not! |
| Challenge | 40 – 100 (4 to 8 hours) | Mostly hilly – steep in places. | This category is for stronger and more experienced riders. Typically these routes are through the mountains with extended climbing. By their nature, these routes are more isolated and may not have cell phone coverage so riders need to be both fit and comfortable riding independently. |
| Training Camp | Custom | Custom | Our Custom Training Camps help cyclists achieve specific training goals with personal training plans and hand-picked routes. See our Custom Training Camps. |
