Guerneville was formerly known
as Stumptown and used to be prime logging country. But,
it began to transform itself into a resort town as
long ago as the 1870s.
Sitting on the sandy banks of the
Russian River, it is now both a thriving family getaway
as well as being a popular gay destination. The eclectic
mix of visitors gives the town a quirky and relaxed
atmosphere. In high season – July
to September – the town is bustling and lively.
Summer attractions include commercial beaches, kayaking
and a jazz festival.
Guerneville is also the gateway town
for the Armstrong Redwood State Reserve – a beautifully
preserved redwood grove with trees over
1,400 years old.
