DESTINATIONS - Columbia River

On this trip you will ride across rolling wheat farms, past bucolic fruit orchards and down the spectacular gorge. The Gorge is home to magnificent waterfalls and framing the horizon are the snow-capped peaks of Mount Hood and Mount Adams.

Where possible, riding is on the Historic Columbia River Highway, described by Bicycling Magazine as one of the best rides in America. The gateway city is Portland - America's most cycle friendly city.

Below you'll find info on Routes and Climate & When to Travel.

Routes

Trips typically start and end in Portland from where we transfer you to the start of the ride. Our routes loop around Mount Hood, descend through the Oregon wheat belt to the Columbia River and then descend down the Gorge to end at the town of Troutdale.

You can choose to start and end anywhere along this loop. For example, riders looking to avoid too much climbing may choose to skip the start of the ride over the shoulder of Mount Hood and head straight to the Gorge at The Dalles enjoying a descent with the river in both Oregon and Washington states.

Some riders might choose to ride all the way back into Portland on what Bicycle Magazine described as a "must ride" bike path. Riders may also choose to extend their riding by adding on a trip to the Willamette Valley.

You'll stay at small towns including Hood River described by Outside Magazine's as one of the Best Towns in America. Other towns visited include Government Camp, The Dalles, Dufur and Cascade Locks.

Optional activities include hiking in the National Forests & State Parks, windsurfing at Hood River and whitewater rafting on the White Salmon River. Sights include the 620 foot Multnomah Falls, the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center and the Bridge of the Gods.

Climate & When to Visit

The best months to visit the Columbia River Gorge are from May through to September. This is when the temperatures are pleasantly warm and the risk of rainfall much lower. The spring and fall are still great for riding but if you choose to visit at these times you need to be prepared for gentle rain and lower temperatures. Avoiding the climb over the shoulder of Mount Hood will also keep you drier and warmer. We do not recommend riding here in winter.

On your trip you will also experience different climates in the different regions you pass through. The lowest temperatures and the highest risk of rainfall are found on the slopes of Mount Hood. The eastern end of the Gorge - at The Dalles - is typically the warmest and driest part of your route.

Below are monthly averages - temperatures (Fahrenheit) and rainfall (inches) - for the Columbia River Gorge towns of Troutdale (west), Hood River (mid) and The Dalles (east). Government Camp on the slopes of Mount Hood is also shown.
