Calistoga is a relaxed town with
a laidback and well-preserved downtown area with
quaint shops and good restaurants. It also
retains a certain wild west feel lacking, as it does,
the polish and pretension of its busier neighbors
further south in the Napa Valley.
Calistoga is situated on top of underground
reservoirs that break through the earth as hot springs
supplying the towns many spa facilities. The spas are
famous for their mud baths. Many spas include facilities
for couples.
The town is also blessed with a number
of fine restaurants. But don't expect to find a Barnes & Noble
in town. Chain stores are banned by law. There
are, however,a number of excellent independent bookstores.
At over 4,000 feet, Mount St Helena dominates
the mountainous backdrop to the town. Robert Louis Stevenson,
perhaps generously, described Mount St Helena as “the
Mont Blanc of the Californian Coast Range.”
